God Goes to Great Lengths To Get Our Attention!

It was a gorgeous day. No humidity, faint breeze, wisps of white clouds – the kind of day that hints autumn is around the corner even as summer lingers. I was walking along the old rails-to-trails path behind my house.

Several miles from home, far from any roads or accesses points, something unusual happened. You’d think I’d feel the vibration underneath my feet. Or hear the motor as it approached. Nope. You’d think I’d notice the odd way my dog was acting as he kept looking over his shoulder.

It wasn’t until an elderly man perched on a decked-out riding mower pulled up beside me that I snapped out of my deep thoughts. I was so startled I lost my footing and nearly tripped. The man’s perfect dentures smiled a wide grin as he tipped his hat. He wore a mismatched outfit of striped pants and a plaid winter coat, and he waved happily like a parade’s grand marshal. He didn’t stop, or even change his steady pace, but passed on by as I watched in amazement and surprise.

Then I burst out laughing. I needed to take my own advice! I’m the one who always tells other people:

“Live in the moment.”

“Don’t miss today worrying about tomorrow or fretting over yesterday.”

“Pay attention to your blessings.”

I don’t remember what I was thinking about that day, but I was preoccupied enough that I was missing my present. I’m sure God tried to get my attention, but I didn’t hear Him. He didn’t give up and instead used something bizarre to jar me out of my distraction. And I’m so glad He did! The rest of the walk was full of wildflowers and bird calls and the scent of wild jasmine.

So dear friends, be on the lookout today for the ways God is trying to get your attention. It might be something even stranger than a decked-out lawnmower!

  1. A story well told. Another Colleen Arnold parable reflected with humor and concluding simple yet mighty message. I think God must sigh and shake his head at his children’s oft oblivion. He truly has a humorous side and you certainly experienced it. Thank you for reflecting this comical and valuable lesson. I’m so glad you “woke up” in time to enjoy the rest of your walk..
